The Law of Reciprocity

TLDR: Give value first, since buyers naturally want to give something back.

What Is It?

If someone does something for you, you feel the pull to return it. That’s the Law of Reciprocity.

It’s automatic. So you don’t have to ask for it, and buyers don’t even notice it happening.

Why Does It Work?

This is just how people work. So we naturally mirror the behaviour we receive, good or bad.

Give someone value, and they feel a quiet pull to give something back. Give someone nothing, and they feel nothing in return.

That pull isn’t loud. But it’s real, and it shapes far more buying decisions than most people admit.

How Can You Use It?

Give Before You Ask

Share something useful before you ever pitch. A sample, some advice or a small resource all work well. So lead with value, not with your offer.

Make It Genuinely Useful

The value has to be real. Because a weak freebie doesn’t trigger the same response. So give something you’d actually be proud to charge for.

Don’t Attach Strings

Give it with no obligation attached. If it feels like a trap, the effect disappears instantly. So let the value stand on its own, with no pressure behind it.

When It Works Best

This works best early in a relationship, before any pitch has happened. So use it right at the start, not as a follow up.

It also works well for services with real expertise behind them. Coaching, consulting and anything advice led all benefit here.

When It Becomes Dangerous

The risk is giving with an obvious hidden motive. Buyers spot a fake freebie fast, and it damages trust instead of building it.

Overdoing it causes a different problem. Because if you give too much for free, buyers stop seeing the value in paying at all.

Used well, this earns goodwill fast. Used as a manipulation tactic, it just makes buyers suspicious.

Common Mistakes

Giving Something Weak

A thin freebie doesn’t create any pull. So make sure what you give actually helps, not just fills a gap.

Pitching Too Soon

Jumping straight to the sell kills the effect. So let the value land first, before you mention what you’re selling.

Making It Feel Like A Trap

If the free thing comes with pressure attached, buyers feel it instantly. So give freely, and let them decide what happens next.

The Law of Reciprocity – An Example

The Free Strategy Call

A business coach offers a free 20 minute strategy call. During it, they give tailored advice and a downloadable resource, with no pitch involved.

They focus purely on being useful. So the call feels like real help, not a sales trap in disguise.

Afterwards, many prospects follow up on their own. They often ask how they can work together next. That question rarely gets forced, it just shows up naturally.

The coach gave value first, with nothing owed. So the prospect feels a quiet pull to give something back, and that something is often the sale itself.
