Practical Sales Training™ > Wordplay > Letter Elongation
What is it?
Letter elongation is the deliberate repetition of letters within a word to create emphasis, tone, or rhythm. Instead of writing “smooth,” you stretch it into “smooooooth.” It’s a playful, human way of adding sound and feeling to text. Elongation makes written words behave more like spoken language, so you can hear the emphasis, the drawl, or the excitement. Used well, it makes your writing feel more conversational and expressive.
How does it work?
When we speak, we naturally stretch sounds to add meaning. We say “sooooo good” to exaggerate, or “noooooo” to show frustration or disbelief. Letter elongation translates that same emotion into written form. It catches attention because it breaks the normal pattern of text and adds personality. The reader’s brain pauses, fills in the sound, and feels what you’re trying to express. It’s also a subtle way of softening tone because it feels more playful and human than punctuation alone.
How can you use it?
Use elongation to add personality, rhythm, or warmth to short-form copy such as social posts, headlines, chat messages, or conversational marketing.
-
To exaggerate emotion: “Sooooo ready for this.”
-
To add humour or playfulness: “Yessss, that’s the one.”
-
To soften tone: “Nooo worries at all.”
-
To slow the pace: “Sloooow and steady wins.”
-
To create brand voice: “Smoooooth onboarding. Faaast results.”
It works best when used sparingly and naturally. Too much and it feels forced or childish. The goal isn’t to change the word, it’s to make the reader feel how you’d say it.
