Cold Visit
What Is It
Physically visiting potential buyers, rather than cold emailing or calling them, can make a genuine difference depending on your industry.
It’s a bigger commitment than sending a message, and that’s exactly the point. Showing up says something an email simply can’t.
Why Does It Work
It works because in person, it’s far easier to build rapport and trust than over email or by phone. Body language and tone carry information that text strips away entirely.
Physically visiting someone also signals real dedication of time and energy. It’s clearly not the same as cutting and pasting a message to a thousand other people.
How Can You Use It
Target Specific Buyers
Visit precisely targeted buyers, having done your homework first. Know exactly who they are and why they’re worth the visit before you turn up.
Visit Shared Work Spaces
Speak to your work neighbours too. Office buildings and co-working spaces put many businesses in one physical location, making each visit far more efficient.
This approach only applies to B2B buyers, since it relies on visiting an actual place of work.
When It Works Best
It works best for high value B2B relationships, where the size of the deal justifies the time a visit takes. Low value, high volume sales rarely make sense for this approach.
It’s also powerful when a market is genuinely saturated with cold emails and calls. Showing up in person becomes rare enough to stand out immediately.
When It Becomes Dangerous
Turning up unannounced can backfire if it feels intrusive rather than considerate. Some buyers value their time and space more than the novelty of a visit.
It’s also risky if you arrive without doing any real homework. Wasting someone’s time in person feels worse than wasting it in an email they can simply delete.
Common Mistakes
Visiting Without Research
Turning up with no idea who you’re speaking to wastes the entire advantage of the visit. Do the homework beforehand, every time.
Treating It Like A Numbers Game
Rushing through as many visits as possible undermines the personal touch that makes this technique work in the first place. Quality beats quantity here.
Ignoring Basic Etiquette
Showing up without checking whether a visit is welcome, or ignoring clear signals to leave, damages goodwill instantly. Read the room, and respect a no.
Cold Visit – An Example
Door To Door Canvassing
Door to door fundraising and political canvassing are classic examples of this in action. Speaking in person, and physically meeting someone, has an impact like nothing else.
Neither approach relies on clever wording. The impact comes almost entirely from someone actually showing up at the door.
