Lead Source

TLDR: If you can’t say where your buyers come from, you’re guessing, and this fixes that with four simple tracking methods.

What Is It

Understanding where your leads come from matters. It tells you what’s working, what isn’t, and where to focus your effort next.

Without this, you’re guessing. And guessing wastes both time and budget.

Why Does It Work

It works because it’s a metric like any other in your business. Track it properly, and you get real insight into what’s working. You’ll also see where you can improve.

If you can’t tell me where your best buyers come from, you need this in place. That gap is worth fixing today.

Guesswork feels fine until you spend money on the wrong channel. So tracking removes that risk before it costs you anything.

How Can You Use It

There are four strategies I use to put this into action.

Tracking Software

Tracking software does the heavy lifting automatically. Tools like the Meta pixel or Google Analytics record where visitors came from. You don’t have to lift a finger.

Tracking Code Promotions

Tracking code promotions work well for offline or verbal channels. A line like “quote TUBE10 for 10% off” tells you which source drove the sale. It’s simple, and it works.

Unique URLs

Unique URLs work when you’re sending different audiences to the same page. I might send Instagram followers to a dedicated link like www.clearsalesmessage.com/instagram. That way I always know where they came from.

Asking People

Asking people directly is the simplest option, and it still works. Just ask how they heard about you, and write the answer down.

Pick whichever method fits the channel. Digital efforts suit tracking software. Word of mouth suits a direct question instead.

When It Works Best

This works best from day one of any new marketing effort. Set up tracking before you spend a single pound, not after.

When It Becomes Dangerous

It becomes dangerous when you collect the data but never act on it. Numbers sitting in a spreadsheet change nothing on their own.

It’s also risky if you track the wrong thing. Counting clicks means little if you’re not also tracking which clicks turn into buyers.

Common Mistakes

Not Tracking At All

Not tracking at all is the most common mistake. Many businesses run for years without knowing where a single lead came from.

Tracking Everything Except Revenue

Tracking everything except revenue is another trap. Attention without a result attached tells you very little.

Never Following Up

Asking once and never following up is the final one. Lead sources shift over time, so revisit the question every few months.

Asking At The Start

On my Selling Confidence™ Score site, I simply ask people as they begin. It’s one short question, right at the start.
