Sneaky Upsell

What is it?

If you’ve ever been offered something – often in hospitality – but without being told the price, you’ve been hit with a sneaky upsell. Still or sparkling water anyone?

Why does it work?

Whilst this strategy might help make more money in the short term, when people realise what is happening, they will feel taken advantage of and perhaps a little bit foolish.

How can you use it?

Always be clear about what things cost and give your buyer the opportunity to make the best decision for themselves.

Example

Coffee shops can often ask “would you like to try our XXX blend” and then you notice on the receipt afterwards that it was an extra 50p…
