Practical Sales Training™ > How to connect with your buyer > Group Names
What is it
Group names, also called collective nouns, are words that describe a collection of people, animals, or things as if they are one.
We know the classics like a herd of cattle or a flock of birds.
In sales, you can invent your own group names to make ideas sharper and more memorable.
In short: a group name turns many into one clear picture.
How it works
Group names work by giving identity to a collection. Instead of describing lots of separate parts, you give the group a single label. That label makes it easier to say, easier to picture, and easier to remember.
In sales and marketing this matters.
-
When you give your audience a group identity, they feel like they belong.
-
When you give your problems a group identity, they feel easier to explain.
-
When you give your solutions a group identity, they feel bigger and stronger.
Example. Instead of saying “we help with leads, enquiries, and referrals,” you could say “we help you grow a pipeline of prospects.” The group name “pipeline” is simple, clear, and commercial.
How you can use it
- Choose the subject – What are you naming a group of? (e.g. cats, emails, ideas).
- Think of traits – What’s their vibe? (e.g. sneaky, loud, fast).
- Pick a tone – Playful, serious, dark, or elegant?
- Find a fitting word – Use something that matches the trait (e.g. “murmur,” “flock,” “storm”).
- Put it together – “A [word] of [subject].”
- Say it out loud – If it flows and feels right, you’ve got it.
Example:
- Subject: ideas
- Traits: fast, surprising
- Word: “spark”
- Result: a spark of ideas
Examples of “things” you can collectively name:
1. Naming Problems
You can bunch frustrations together with a vivid phrase.
-
- “You’re probably dealing with a flood of admin tasks.”
- “Most salespeople face a silence of prospects after the first call.”
This makes the pain more relatable and sticks in their head.
2. Describing Benefits
Turn your solution into a positive collective image.
-
- “With us, you’ll enjoy a spark of ideas every week.”
- “Our software creates a wave of opportunities.”
It makes the outcome feel alive, not flat.
3. Framing Social Proof
Use it to describe your client base or community.
-
- “We’ve helped a chorus of entrepreneurs simplify their sales.”
- “Join the growing flock of businesses already using Clear Sales Message™.”
It gives a sense of belonging.
4. Branding & Messaging
Catchy collective nouns can be used in product names, offers, or campaigns.
-
- “The Bundle of Breakthroughs” (course pack)
- “A Toolkit of Tactics” (lead magnet)
- “A Vault of Value” (membership site)
They make the intangible more tangible.
5. Storytelling & Content
They’re great for posts, headlines, or hooks.
-
- “Do you have a tangle of leads but no clear next step?”
- “I’ll show you how to turn a trickle of enquiries into a river of sales.”
They grab attention because they sound fresh and unusual
