Practical Sales Training™ > Wordplay > The Bracket Effect
What is it?
The Bracket Effect is when you use brackets ( ) to add a quick, human aside to your message.
It’s a way to break the fourth wall – to say what you really mean in a way that feels natural, funny, or honest.
Think of it as “your message + a whisper of truth.”
How does it work?
Brackets change the rhythm of a sentence.
They make readers pause, lean in, and listen to the voice inside the brackets – which feels like a private comment from a real person, not a corporate line.
It works because it adds:
- Honesty – you’re saying the quiet part out loud.
- Humour – you lighten serious statements.
- Humanity – you sound more like a person and less like a brochure.
It turns a flat statement into something that feels real and emotionally intelligent.
How can you use it?
Use The Bracket Effect when you want to show personality, add context, or defuse a bold claim.
It works especially well in headlines, social captions, and email copy.
Examples:
- “We make sales simple (finally).”
- “Guaranteed results (if you actually follow the plan).”
- “Clarity that converts (because confusion kills sales).”
- “You’ll sell more (and sleep better).”
- “No fluff (just words that work).”
- “We’re not for everyone (just the ones who want results).”
