What is it?

If you want to attract attention, you have to do things that are a little different – in this case swapping letters for numbers.

Why does it work?

It works because it catches the eye and, in the case of the GoPro example here – it makes you smile as they have been playful and clever in their approach. If this advert simply said “It’s small and has 4k resolution” we wouldn’t be talking about it…

How can you use it?

To use number letters, there are two approaches:

  • Same sound –  “4K-ING” = “FOUR-KING”
  • Same Look – “4” looks like “A”

In terms of which numbers can be swapped over, these are the simplest and most obvious choices:

  • A = 4
  • B = 8
  • E = 3
  • I = 1
  • L = l
  • O = 0
  • S = 5
  • T = 7
  • Y = 7
  • Z = 2

Example

Go Pro use the term “4k’ing tiny” in their messaging to not only be controversial, but to talk about the fact that their camera is 4K resolution AND it’s small.

The Expendables 4 is another great example of multi layered meaning and wordplay using number letters.
