Concentration Hook

Practical Sales Training™  > How To Get Attention > Concentration Hook

What is it?

A Concentration Hook is a device you use to keep your audience paying attention for longer. It gives them a reason to stay engaged because they are waiting for something specific to happen.

Think of a radio show telling listeners “stay tuned for the new Taylor Swift track coming up” or “we’ll announce the winner after the break.” That little hook keeps people concentrating, rather than drifting away.

How does it work?

The Concentration Hook works by creating anticipation. Instead of passively consuming your message, your audience now has a reason to focus.

It is effective because:

  • Attention has a job: People are told what to look or listen out for.

  • Anticipation builds focus: Waiting for a promised moment keeps the brain engaged.

  • Curiosity creates retention: When people expect something, they are more likely to remember both the wait and the payoff.

Without a concentration hook, your message risks blending into the background. With one, you give your audience a reason to stick with you.

How can you use it?

You can apply the Concentration Hook in any sales or marketing message where you want people to stay engaged until the end.

  • Webinars and presentations: Tell people you will share a secret, tip, or bonus at the end.

  • Podcasts and videos: Tease an upcoming story or guest to keep listeners tuned in.

  • Emails: Promise an answer or reveal later in the message so they keep reading.

  • Sales conversations: Drop a line like “there’s one detail that makes this work, I’ll explain in a minute” to hold attention.

The principle is simple. If you want people to concentrate, give them something to concentrate on.

Example

When sharing my lead magnet video with potential buyers I allude to a magic trick which is in the video to pique interest and get them watching to the end.
