Solomon’s Paradox

Understand Your Buyer > How People Work > Solomon’s Paradox

What is it?

Solomon’s Paradox is the idea that we’re often way better at giving wise advice to other people than we are at solving our own problems. It’s named after King Solomon — famous for his wisdom — who gave great advice to others, but made messy choices in his own personal life. In simple terms: we think more clearly when we’re not emotionally involved.

Why does it work?

It works because when you’re in the middle of your own situation, it’s hard to be objective. Emotions, ego, fear, and overthinking all cloud your judgement. But when you’re advising someone else, you’re naturally more calm, detached, and logical. You zoom out. You think long-term. And suddenly, the smart move seems obvious — just not when it’s your own life.

How can you use it?

You can use Solomon’s Paradox by stepping outside of your own head. When you’re stuck, try pretending a friend is in your exact situation — what would you tell them to do? You can even write it down as a letter or speak it out loud. This mental shift helps cut through the noise and bring clarity. It’s a simple trick, but it can lead to much wiser decisions, faster.

Example

Imagine you have a friend who’s stuck in a toxic job. They’re underpaid, undervalued, and constantly stressed – but they’re scared to leave because it feels risky.

You’d probably say:
“Mate, you’re better than this. You’ve got experience, you’ve got options. Start applying elsewhere. You don’t need to put up with this.”

Now flip it.
You’re in that same job, with the same stress, the same doubts. Suddenly you overthink it.
“What if I don’t find anything else? What if I regret it? Maybe it’s not that bad…”

That’s Solomon’s Paradox.
You can see the situation clearly when it’s someone else – but your own emotions blur the obvious choice.
Using the paradox intentionally – by stepping outside yourself – helps you get to the same clarity you’d have for a friend.
